Autumn Skincare:

Is It Time to Switch to Rich?

By Kirsti Shuba

As the temperature drops and the central heating goes on, your skin may need a little more support. Here's how to recognise the signs and make the right changes to your skincare routine.

Why does your skin change in autumn?

Cold winds, lower humidity and central heating can all affect how your skin feels and behaves.

As the air becomes drier, your skin can lose moisture more readily. If its protective barrier isn't functioning as well as it should, you may begin to notice tightness, roughness, flaking or increased sensitivity.

Even skin that has been comfortable throughout summer can start to feel different.

The answer isn't necessarily more skincare. It's making sure your skin has what it needs.

At Katherine Daniels, we believe in treating your skin first, not just the symptoms you can see or feel. When your skin barrier is well supported, your skin is better able to retain moisture and remain comfortable and resilient.

Dry, dehydrated or sensitive? Know the difference.

Before changing your products, consider what your skin is telling you.

  • Dry  skin naturally produces less oil. It may feel rough, tight or uncomfortable and benefit from additional nourishing lipids.
  • Dehydrated skin lacks water, not necessarily oil. It may look dull, show fine dehydration lines or feel tight, even if your skin is naturally oily.
  • Sensitive skin may become more reactive to environmental changes, with increased redness, stinging or discomfort.

These concerns can overlap, but they don't all need the same solution.

That's why we recommend reviewing your skin rather than automatically changing your entire routine.

Switch to Rich: Small changes, better support.

You don't need a cupboard full of products. Often, changing your Skin Defence Cream or introducing a more nourishing or hydrating Skin Boost is enough to give your skin the additional support it needs.

Here are four Katherine Daniels favourites to consider as the seasons change.

Don't forget the foundations of a great routine.

Richer products can be helpful, but they're not a substitute for a consistent routine.

Continue to cleanse thoroughly but gently, avoid over-exfoliating and use your prescribed products morning and evening.

If your skin is already irritated or uncomfortable, simplifying your routine may be more beneficial than introducing several new products at once.

Healthy skin behaves better. And consistency matters just as much in October as it does in July.

Is Your Skin Ready for Autumn?

If your skin feels different, it's worth reviewing your routine before the colder months arrive.

You don't necessarily need both a new concentrate and a new cream. The right adjustment depends on what your skin needs now. Sometimes a richer cream is the answer. Sometimes your skin needs additional nourishment or hydration beneath it. And sometimes the best decision is to continue with exactly what you're already using.
